Why An Online Course Is The Way To Go

Back in 1984, the University of Toronto launched the first fully online course. Since then, the number of online courses has exploded. There are now thousands to choose from offered by universities around the world. These online courses have become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional courses. Perhaps you too have considered taking an online course? If so, here are some reasons why it could be the way to go.

You can study from anywhere

Online courses don’t have to be studied at a school building or university campus. Instead, you can study them from anywhere – from home, on your lunch break in the staff room at work or even while travelling the world. This flexibility makes it easier to fit studies around other commitments and goals.

You can do it in your own time

On top of studying from any location, online courses allow you to study in your own time at your own pace. Some do still have exams and essay deadlines on specific dates, but you don’t have to worry about attending lectures or seminars at certain times of the day. This also allows you to more easily study around other commitments. You can still work during the day to earn money and study in the evenings, or look after kids during the day and study after they go to sleep.

You can access a wide variety of courses

When you choose to study at a university campus, you’re restricted to whatever universities you are willing to physically travel to. Opting for an online course instead gives you the freedom to choose from courses around the world. That’s a lot more options! You’ll find all kinds of options ranging from an online bachelor’s in engineering to a masters of project management online. There are even some online courses out there that cannot be studied on campus.

It could be a lot cheaper than a traditional course

Online courses also tend to come with cheaper fees than their traditional on campus counterparts. This is because they do not require the same level of resources to run. You can also save money as an online student by not having to travel to lectures and seminars or pay for student accommodation. For those on a tight budget or for those that want to reduce their student debt, studying online is an economical solution.

… but online courses do have their drawbacks

While there are many perks to studying online, it’s important to not overlook some of the benefits of traditional courses when choosing the right study option. Some people find that studying on campus and having set seminars and lectures provides a fixed routine that makes it easier to motivate oneself to study. There is also the social aspect of studying at a physical location – you can make new friends and build connections. For some young people, it’s also a chance to move out and learn new life skills. Of course, mature students may not benefit from any of this (which is why many older students choose online courses).
